In this article low cost and low complexity E/O and O/E modules for radio over fibre link have been presented. The modules are built based on pigtail coaxial laser diode and photodiode available on the market. In the designs special attention has been focused on achieving flat transmission characteristics in the frequency range of 1‐3 GHz. The modules have been equipped with signalization of the proper supply and generation of optical carrier. The devices have been dedicated to transmission of modulated RF signals through optical fibre in radio over fibre link. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 55:2423–2425, 2013
