This article presents six typical loop resonators with single electric or magnetic resonance. Capacitive or inductive load leads to the invention of reflection zeros and the position of loaded gap or via results in different mutual coupling effects. After detailed study on the characteristics of such six typical loop resonator prototypes, a second‐order filter with a more compact size and high selectivity is proposed. Realization of spurious band suppression as well as miniaturization is investigated and achieved. Full wave simulation and necessary measurements are taken and good agreements are achieved. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 55:2241–2244, 2013
