We report a new structure of metamaterial, consisting of an array of double concentric rings and cross stripes of metal film separated by a dielectric layer. Using Finite Integration Technique, its properties are investigated; the metamaterial exhibits left handed behavior for both linear as well as circular polarization. Further the metamaterial is used as a cover to improve the directionality of a rectangular patch antenna using quadrature feed for producing a focused circularly polarized beam at frequency 11 GHz.© 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
