A compact, reconfigurable planar inverted‐F antenna (PIFA) for mobile phone applications is presented. Based on recent smart‐phone geometries, a PIN diode on an antenna radiator is used for frequency‐reconfigurable operation with a PIFA structure. The proposed novel hexa‐band built‐in mobile antenna, which is designed to cover LTE, GSM850, GSM900, DCS, PCS, and UMTS bands, is satisfactory in terms of its reflection coefficient, radiation patterns, and average gain (efficiency). A prototype is investigated, and good agreement between simulations and measurements is shown. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 55:1926–1928, 2013
