In this article, the performances of E‐band (81–86 GHz) millimeter‐wave for gigabit point‐to‐point wireless communications are studied based on experimental measurement data. Specifically, the E‐band link budget is provided by examining propagation path loss, shadow fading, and rain attenuations. A model of rain attenuation in E‐band is proposed and compared with ITU‐R recommendation model and measurement data. Communication link availability vs. coverage for different rainfall rates and antenna gain sets are investigated for providing useful information on design of systems. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
