A pattern reconfigurable patch antenna using a switched loop structure is presented. The loop structure for switchable radiation pattern is connected with a feeding line of the patch antenna. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at 2.5 GHz band with 4.2 dBi maximum gain for wireless communication. The sizes of the rectangular patch and the ground plane are 28 mm × 28 mm and 50 mm × 60 mm, respectively. The simulation and experimental results show that the antenna radiation pattern can be changed with switch on/off configuration. The average gain value in the switch off case is 4.09 dB less than that of the switch on case over the range of from 30 to 150°. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
