A compact single‐fed circularly polarized microstrip antenna is proposed for radio frequency identification readers. The antenna consists of a square patch with truncated corners printed a thick FR4 substrate and a probe‐fed metal strip that is adopted for wideband operations. Results show that the antenna achieves a 10‐dB return loss bandwidth of 11.02% (2.31–2.59 GHz) and a 3‐dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 2.45% (2.42–2.48 GHz) or 6‐dB AR bandwidth of 4.9% (2.39–2.51 GHz). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
