An all‐optical encoder performing a binary to octal amplitude shift keying conversion based on cross‐polarization modulation and cross‐gain modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier is presented. The encoder is experimentally demonstrated by making, in a separated signal of different wavelength, an eight‐level ASK signaling of three parallel binary waveforms. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
