A novel ultra‐wide band planar antenna with dual band‐notched characteristics is presented in this article. The antenna has compact size of 23 × 28 × 0.8 mm 3 and it consists of novel patch. The measured antenna has impedance bandwidth of 3–10.7 GHz with dual notched bands of 3.3–3.7 GHz and 5.1–5.9 GHz to avoid interference from WiMAX and WLAN bands, respectively. A set of spiral slots and novel pulse‐shaped slots are etched in ground plane to obtain the dual notched bands. The effects of different geometrical parameters on various characteristics of antenna are investigated. The proposed antenna has consistent gain and stable radiation pattern. The measured group delay indicates that the antenna has good time domain response.© 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
