This paper describes the development and performance of a 2 by 4 element suspended microstrip patch antenna array with linear polarization. The proposed structure with a new geometrical composition of entire array possesses the advantages of being wide bandwidth, high gain, precise side lobe level control and low cross‐polarization level. The measured antenna has the peak gain 14.12 dBi and the cross‐polarization is lower than −16 dBi within the impedance bandwidth. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
