We investigate generation of microwave passband signals with a tunable central frequency using optical up‐conversion. We consider systems without and with optical fiber transmission links. The technique performs photodetection of optically filtered gain switched laser pulses. Using appropriate electrical filters, we demonstrate up‐conversion centered at 25, 35, and 45 GHz. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
