A varactorless LC‐voltage‐controlled oscillator (VCO) topology is proposed.To exploit a frequency tuning, LC‐VCO adopts a variable capacitance block composed with a transistor and a capacitor. The prototype LC‐VCO is implemented in a 65‐nm CMOS technology. The measurement results show a tuning range of 4.31–4.45 GHz and a phase noise of −115.8 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency. Power consumption is 2.44 mA from a 0.5 V supply. The die area is only 0.126 mm 2 . © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
