A broadband planar microstrip to rectangular waveguide transition has been proposed. The transition features simple structure which consists of a planar printed circuit inserted into the shorted waveguide. In the proposed design, a wide bandwidth is achieved with the use of additional tuning elements coupled to the exciting printed probe. The proposed concept of the transition has been investigated numerically and verified by measurements of the fabricated element in the X‐band. Further, a successful design of similar transition has been made in millimeter frequency range operating in W‐band. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
