An analysis of microwave‐photonic links using a series of external phase modulators is presented.Experimental results for a cascade of two modulation stages are used as a proof of principle and agree with the theoretical predictions. Such architectures can be used to improve the performance in external‐modulation analog fiber‐optic links. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
