A compact and simple coplanar waveguide fed (CPW‐fed) monopole antenna with dual‐band applications is proposed. The main features of the proposed antenna are the compact dimensions and band‐operating characteristics that are obtained without modifying the radiator or the ground plane. The antenna consists of a square patch as radiator, a partial CPW‐ground plane, and a slotted conductor‐backed plane. Impedance matching for dual‐band operations is achieved by a pair of mirror square‐shaped slots at the conductor‐backed plane. The proposed antenna has a small size of 15 × 15 × 0.8 mm 3 , and measured to cover the bandwidth for 5.2 GHz (5150–5350 MHz) and 5.8 GHz (5725–5825 MHz) bands for IEEE 802.11a and also X‐band (8–12 GHz) and provides suitable radiation pattern and antenna gains for the operating bands. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
