A novel all‐optical modulation format conversion scheme from on‐off keying to quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) utilizing wavelength conversion in the semiconductor optical amplifier Mach–Zehnder Interferometers is proposed. The numerical simulations show generation of the 16‐QAM signal proofing the principle of the proposed concept and its utility in future telecommunication systems. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
