In this article, a novel design of dual‐band printed monopole antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide for radiofrequency identification (RFID) applications is presented. By cutting two vertical rectangular slits in the radiating patch, a new resonance at lower frequencies (2.4 GHz) can be achieved, also by embedding a rotated C‐shaped slot, the antenna achieves good dual‐band operation. The measured impedance bandwidth for –10 dB return loss is from 2.05 to 2.89 GHz (34%) and 5.10 to 6.09 GHz (15.0%), covering the 2.4/5.8 GHz RFID operating bands. Simulated and experimental results obtained for this antenna show that the proposed single band‐notch square monopole antenna has a good antenna gains and radiation behavior within the 2.4/5.8 GHz frequencies. The designed antenna has a small size of 12 × 18 mm 2 . © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 54:2426–2429, 2012; View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary.com.
