A very small and compact ultra‐wideband (UWB) slot antenna is presented, which possesses band‐notch characteristic to eliminate interference signals. The antenna comprises a rectangular aperture (9 × 18 mm 2 ) etched on the ground‐plane of a printed circuit board and a rectangular shaped stub, also total size of the antenna is 19 × 19 mm 2 . The antenna uses a novel technique comprising of open‐end stubs at the periphery of the ground‐plane in the vicinity of the feed‐line to improve its VSWR performance over the UWB. An effective conductor‐backed plane structure is used to generate the necessary band‐notch characteristic at the WLAN interfering band (5–6 GHz). The antenna exhibits broadband impedance matching with stable and omnidirectional radiation patterns and gain performance despite its very small size across the entire UWB from 3–11 GHz. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
