A simple fiber Bragg grating (FBG) bending sensor based on microbending induced cladding mode recoupling is presented, in which cladding mode is excited and recoupled through microbending structure in single mode fiber.Experimental results show that the excited counter‐propagation weak cladding mode in microbending FBG is very sensitive to curvature which can be used for temperature independent bending measurement. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
