A modified method of lines combined with a suitable transformation of the resulting coupled differential equations is developed for solving TM plane waves incident on cylindrical structures with dielectric properties that are function of two spatial directions. Numerical performance of the method is presented and found to be satisfactory. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
