We report a photonic synthesis scheme for continuous wave millimeter‐wave signal generation using a single passively mode‐locked laser diode (PMLLD), optical filtering and photomixing in a fast photodiode. The phase noise of the photonically synthesized signals is evaluated and inherits the characteristics of the PMLLD electrical power spectrum. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
