We propose a design methodology for predicting the coverage of a wireless sensor network (WSN) when operating on a radio over fiber (RoF) backhaul. We analyze the RoF consequences in the WSN radio coverage even for multiple cells and the impact of new cells insertion. An analytical approach identifies the main parameters permitting to determine the range where it is possible to install sensors. Laboratory experiments validate the analytical expression for different scenarios. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 54:1277–1281, 2012
