A novel dual‐band microstrip patch antenna based on complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) is proposed and analyzed.By etching two CSRRs on the ground plane of a conventional patch antenna, the proposed dual‐band metamaterial antenna can be easily realized. The proposed antenna shows good performances at both resonant frequencies. The CSRRs embedded make a major contribution to the first operating band, but have a minor effect on the second operating band which is originated by the patch. Good shape patterns are achieved at each operating frequecy region and the experimental results correspond well with simulated results. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
