A novel low‐cost element is proposed for S‐band multifunction phased‐array radars: a compact stacked‐patch configuration is fed with a strip‐line hybrid‐ring network providing the dual polarizations for weather‐surveillance applications.Full‐wave simulations in a phased‐periodic array environment show promising features, in terms of reduced cross‐polarization, high isolation between the input ports, scanning capability, and regular radiation patterns. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
