Abstract This article presents the demonstration of 1‐D uniform and chirped electromagnetic bandgap structures in substrate integrated waveguides operating at 60 GHz achieved through modulation of the waveguide sidewalls. Numerical and experimental measurements are presented and discussed. In the chirped case, a structure having a dispersive group delay slope of approximately 0.15 ns/GHz over an operating bandwidth of 5 GHz is achieved, although some group delay ripple appears in measurement which affects the realized linearity of the device. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
