A switchable loop‐loaded printed dipole antenna is introduced for a frequency‐tuning operation. Two loop elements with extensions are placed asymmetrically at each side of a twisted dipole excited by a balun/feed vertically placed underneath the dipole. PIN diodes are used between each loop element and its extension to achieve switchable antenna operation for 3 and 5.5 GHz bands. Simulated and measurement results are presented to demonstrate the proposed tuning performance. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
