A new configuration of an X‐band planar microstrip antenna is presented. As the base element a single layer cavity‐backed microstrip patch antenna is chosen, and the proposed antenna is optimized by Ansoft HFSS. A metallic cavity is introduced for expanding the frequency band. The simulated and measured results show that the impedance bandwidth with −15 dB return loss is about 24.6%. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
