Novel modifications on axial‐mode wire helical antennas are introduced by replacing the wire with a tapered strip and using a doubly tapered impedance matching section. These modifications increase the bandwidth by 8% and reduce the helix height buy more than 0.6 wavelength. Simulation and measurement results are presented. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 53:2990‐2994, 2011; View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary.com.
