An ultrawideband (UWB) printed monopole antenna (PMA) for the 3.4/5.5 GHz dual‐band notched operation is presented. The antenna has a rectangular radiating element with a symmetrical staircase structure in the bottom or feed region and fed by a 50‐Ω microstrip line. By introducing two open‐circuited stubs from the two sides of the microstrip feedline, dual band‐notched characteristics in the WiMAX/WLAN bands are achieved. The proposed antenna is effectively designed, simulated, fabricated, and measured providing broadband impedance matching, appropriate gain, and stable radiation pattern characteristics. An UWB and single band‐notched UWB antenna are also fabricated for comparison. The proposed UWB antenna is investigated in time domain, and it has been observed experimentally that the received fifth derivative of Gaussian pulse is not distorted in the main waveform but some amount of ringing is observed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
