Abstract In this article, we have proposed a novel ultra high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) metal tag antenna mountable on the metallic surface. Three techniques (T‐shaped slot, two rectangular slots for impedance matching, and air gap technique for reading distance enhancement) are used to obtain a good performance of metal tag antenna on the metallic surface. All simulations are carried out by Ansoft HFSS software. Moreover, by fabricating the antenna, the simulation results are verified by experimental data. Good performances such as reading distance and sensitivity have been observed. Details of the proposed antenna design and the simulated and measured results are presented and discussed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
