This article points out nonlinear propagation of a continuous wave (CW) signal with a small perturbation.Available studies in the literature define some parameters for the interaction between the CW and the perturbation but, there is no indication about the boundaries for this model to be applicable. This work aims to define the parameters for triggering modulation instability (MI) and for modeling the nonlinear propagation. Moreover, the conservation of energy is taken into account as constraint to investigate the nonlinear regime. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
