A novel approach for designing triple‐bandpass filters has been presented in this letter. The triple‐bandpass filters are constructed by stepped impedance resonators and common half‐wavelength resonators. The stepped‐impedance resonators operate at the first and third passband and some coupled resonators are introduced to increase the degrees of freedom in extracting coupling coefficients of the first and third passband. The other resonators are designed to operate at the second passband. This structure improves design freedom to fit easily the specific coupling coefficients at all passbands simultaneously and the locations of each passband can also be tuned in a large region. To verify the presented concept, two experimental examples of filters with a triple‐band Chebyshev and triple‐band quasi‐elliptic response operating at 2.4, 3.6, and 5.2 GHz was designed and fabricated with microstrip technology. The measured results are in good agreement with the full‐wave simulation results. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett, 2011; View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary.com.
