An optical fiber curvature sensor based on fiber loop mirror with a short section of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The PMF of about 100 cm long is inserted into fiber loop mirror, and a section of it about 142 mm is used as the sensing element. The output spectra of fiber loop mirror under different curvatures are measured and analyzed. The sensitivity of the curvature measurement of 0.0344 m –1 pm –1 is experimentally achieved in the range of 9.3–21.7 m –1 . The temperature effect of the proposed sensor is also analyzed. Comparing with the sensor of photonic crystal fiber, it is more convenient and simply. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
