A simple finite‐difference time‐domain subgridding technique to obtain radiation patterns of antennas mounted on an electrically large ground plane is introduced. Unilateral perfectly matched layer is inserted between regional interfaces so as to eliminate late‐time instability. The ratio of the time steps is the same as the ratio of the space steps and can be large. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
