We have experimentally demonstrated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal generation by an optical phase modulator and a 40 GHz radio‐over‐fiber symmetric system with turbo coding technique. The power penalty for the 2.5 Gb/s downlink data carried by 40‐GHz millimeter‐wave after transmission over 50‐km SMF‐28 is smaller than 0.5 dB. The OFDM signals without coding and with coding after transmission at a BER of 1 × 10 −3 is −17.5 and −20 dBm, respectively. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
