A reconfigurable digital receiver based on the k ‐means algorithm is proposed for phase‐modulated subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) and quadrature amplitude‐modulated single carrier, phase‐modulated radio‐over‐fiber links. We report successful demodulation after 40 km single mode fiber transmission with three 50 Mbaud 8PSK SCM signals and a 312.5 Mbaud 16QAM single carrier. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
