A bionical structure is applied to antenna design in this letter. An L‐band printed monopole antenna using the shape of the octopus is proposed for 1.6 GHz based on the concept of bionics. Its radiation characteristics including impedance bandwidth, radiation patterns, and gain are simulated and measured. The proposed antenna has attractively good performances that the radiation patterns are unipolar. Method of applying bionics to antenna design will serve as a good candidate for the future antenna design. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
