In this letter, a compact ultra wideband (UWB) circular monopole antenna with multi‐bandstop characteristics is proposed. An interdigital defected ground structure (IDDGS) etched under the feed line of the proposed antenna is utilized. This UWB antenna has multiple stop bands, which are 2.10–3.80 GHz (WCDMA), 5.30–5.90 GHz (WLAN), 7.65–7.90 GHz, and 9.55–9.75 GHz. An IDDGS yields multiple resonances and the length of an IDDGS affects an antenna resonant frequency. Simulated and measured results show good agreement in the proposed antenna. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
