A modified method of lines is developed for propagation of TM waves in waveguides with constant arbitrary cross sections. The proposed method finds the eigenmodes and associated wave functions in a very practical manner. Numerical performance and accuracy of the proposed method are examined for waveguides with well known characteristics and are found to be very satisfactory. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
