A novel scheme of ultra‐wideband pulse generation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The scheme is based on polarization differentiation control in an electroabsorption modulator. The optical structure is simple. Ultra‐wideband monocycle pulses with a 10‐dB bandwidth of 8.0 GHz have been generated. This generation system has the potential for large bandwidth, low‐voltage operation. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
