A novel planar monopole slot antenna that possesses a controllable band‐notched property for ultra‐wideband (UWB) applications is presented. The antenna, which consists of a square slot patch with a vertical coupled strip, only occupies a small size of 15 (L) × 15 (W) × 1.6 (H) mm 3 . By properly inserting a thin gap between the coupled strip and the slot patch, the antenna can achieve a wide bandwidth covering 3.05–11.15 GHz with a sharp rejection band of 5.12–6.08 GHz, where the frequency rejection performance can be controlled flexibly by employing various strip widths and thin gaps. Good measured omnidirectional radiation patterns and transmission responses also indicate that the proposed antenna is well suitable for UWB operation. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
