A novel compact triband monopole antenna loaded with grooves for WLAN/WiMAX applications is proposed. Basically, the antenna structure is based on a pentagon‐shaped radiator and a coplanar waveguide feeding structure. Through introduction of four different grooves into the radiator and coplanar grounds, the antenna achieves triple band characteristics with a compact size of 20 × 30 × 1.6 mm 3 . As an investigation, an analysis of the grooves shows some important features affecting the impedance characteristics. Prototypes of the proposed antenna are fabricated and measured. Numerical and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed antenna satisfies the −10 dB impedance bandwidth requirements while covering the WLAN and WiMAX bands simultaneously. Meanwhile, radiation performances of the antenna in the operation bands are also observed and discussed. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
