A novel structure with a pair of symmetric E‐shaped slots is applied in the design of ultrawideband (UWB) antenna with band‐notched characteristic. Based on the proposed technique, a printed monopole antenna is present. The band‐notched characteristic is achieved by introducing a pair of E‐shaped slots to reduce the interference of the existing wireless local area network (WLAN) band ( f c = 5.2 GHz) and the required UWB bandwidth is also acquainted. To validate our design concept, the antenna is studied theoretically and experimentally. The results show that the proposed antenna has good UWB‐related performances and band‐notched function. The proposed symmetric E‐shaped slot is very effective and convenient to design the UWB antennas where band‐notch is required. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
