Optical control of the coupling characteristics of parallel guide directional couplers in image guide technology is investigated experimentally in suppression mode at W‐band. Compared with previous designs, the control range of coupling versus illumination intensity is significantly increased because of a symmetric layout of the active section in dark state. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
