Abstract A 5 GHz‐band voltage‐controlled oscillator employing on‐chip coplanar‐waveguide resonator instead of inductor–capacitor–resonator is proposed, designed, and fabricated in 0.18 μm CMOS technology. The advantages of the proposed VCO are the wider frequency‐tuning range; smaller chip area and phase noise is to be −117 dBc/Hz (@1 MHz offset frequency), which is comparable to that of a conventional LC–VCO. © 2010 American Association of Anatomists Microwave Opt Technol Lett 52: 763–766, 2010; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).
