In this study, a novel miniaturized microstrip patch antenna based on meander‐folded, shorted‐patch (SP) structure is introduced. The technique enables a decrease of the original quarter‐wavelength patch length approximately by the factor 1/ N , where N is the number of the vertically placed patch plates above the ground plane. The antenna operational principle is explained with the help of E‐field distribution and can be interpreted as SP with vertically meander‐folded cavity. Further modification of the top patch plate to ensure symmetrical radiation pattern is proposed. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
