In this article, we discuss various requirements of antenna design for passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, we outline a generic design process and show how RFID tags loaded with a metamaterial slab are able to increase the read range and to decouple the tag with the tagged objects. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
