Cantor fibers having a multilayered cladding structured according to the Cantor fractal scheme are introduced. In each layer the radial field distribution is determined solving a boundary value problem. The mode propagation constant is calculated minimizing the outgoing power flux. Such fibers suffer from low losses even for few cladding layers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
