This article describes a cavity‐backed slot antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW). The designed antenna operates at 30 GHz and uses an inverted configuration with the CPW feed line on the top of the substrate and the slot facing toward the metallic cavity. Both simulated and measured results for the antenna's return loss and radiation patterns are presented and they are in good agreement. This slot antenna of a very compact size and good radiation characteristics should be very useful for many communication systems at 8 mm band. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
