In this article, the highly directive emission based on a new type of metamaterial has been demonstrated. A structure of crossed metallic strips with slots is designed. By embedding the source inside a slab of such material, the emitted energy is concentrated around the normal of the slab based on the zero refraction principle. An antenna is constructed, and the simulation has been done on it. The results show that highly directive property is achieved. An experimental verification of this effect is given in the microwave domain, and the results agree well with the simulations. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
